Description
Technique: Long, gliding strokes called effleurage, kneading, circular motions, and light tapping. The therapist works with the direction of blood flow back toward the heart and keeps muscles in a relaxed state. Oil or lotion is used to let hands glide smoothly.
Pressure: Light to medium. You can ask for firmer, but it's not designed to get deep into the muscle.
Goal: Relaxation, improved circulation, stress relief, and general muscle tension release.
Best for: First-time massage, high stress, trouble sleeping, feeling generally tight but not in specific chronic pain, wanting to unwind.
A typical session is 60-90 minutes and you should feel calm, looser, and sleepy afterward.
Deep Tissue Massage
More therapeutic and focused. It works on the deeper layers of muscle and the fascia, the connective tissue around muscles.
Technique: Slower strokes, direct pressure, friction across the grain of the muscle, and sustained holds. The therapist will use knuckles, elbows, and forearms to reach deeper adhesions and knots. Less oil is used so there is more grip.
Pressure: Medium to firm. It can be intense and sometimes slightly uncomfortable — you should feel a "good hurt," never sharp pain or holding your breath. It's normal to be a bit sore for a day after.
Goal: Break up chronic muscle tension, scar tissue and adhesions, improve range of motion, and address specific pain points.
Best for: Chronic neck/shoulder tightness from desk work, low back tightness, athletic recovery, repetitive strain, postural issues, old injury tightness.
A typical session is also 60-90 minutes, but often focused on 1-2 problem areas rather than full body.
